Normal Black Market horseshoes are worth it when at 50% (it's the same value as getting 1k for 10k gems in the Black Market Growth), but don't get them when they are only 20% off, each refresh of the BM varies.

i played almost 1 month, the first 2 weeks was F2P then i bought the ad free card.
im sitting at 25M CP and finished Chapter 41 already with 2 hero unlocked knight of the end and undead. free to get from christmas event.
i would say my best investment gem was for energy
i always saved up energy to max, then wait for reset. after that i do all daily quest and bought energy until 150 or sometimes max buy.
then do the 100x travel.
this will allow you to get so many gold that you can invest in talent (will help you get top 5 rank pvp get gem reward)
travel will gave you so much things like spices, lucky stars, etc that made you in top 5 rank and get energy + gem
spinning lucky star with 400x will gave you tons of gem and energy also pet egg and pet food.
from all of that, i got my energy gem investment back and still have consistently around 8K to 10K to open S chest.
so yeah. definitely go for energy 🙂
